Short menstrual cycles are important information when trying to conceive

If your period arrives every 23 or 24 days, you may have been told that your cycle is still regular, so there is nothing to investigate. 

Regularity is useful information, but cycle length also tells us something.

A consistently short menstrual cycle can change when ovulation happens, narrow the time available for conception and sometimes point towards hormonal patterns worth exploring.

What counts as a short menstrual cycle?

Your menstrual cycle begins on the first day of your period and ends the day before your next period starts.

The American Society for Reproductive Medicine describes regular menstrual cycles as generally falling between 21 and 35 days. Even within that range, a cycle that repeatedly sits at the shorter end may still provide useful information when you are trying to conceive.

One 23-day cycle after illness, travel or a stressful month is different from seeing the same pattern for six months. Your usual pattern and any recent changes are often more helpful than one isolated cycle.

Earlier ovulation can change your fertile window

A shorter cycle often means ovulation happens earlier than the commonly quoted day 14.

For example, someone with a 23-day cycle may ovulate around day 9, although the exact timing varies. Waiting until the middle of the cycle to begin trying could mean missing some of the most fertile days.

The NHS explains that ovulation commonly occurs around 10 to 16 days before the next period, rather than on the same cycle day for everyone.

Tracking cervical mucus, basal body temperature, or ovulation test results may help you understand your individual timing. Apps that predict ovulation from an average cycle length can be less useful when your pattern differs from the standard 28-day model.

What could a short cycle be telling you?

Short cycles can happen for several reasons. Sometimes the follicular phase, which occurs before ovulation, is shorter. In other cases, the luteal phase between ovulation and the next period may be brief.

Possible areas to explore include:

  • Earlier ovulation
  • Changes in ovarian reserve
  • Thyroid function
  • Prolactin levels
  • Perimenopausal hormonal changes
  • Bleeding that may not be a true period


Research has found an association between shorter cycles and reduced fecundability, meaning a lower chance of conceiving within a given cycle. However, a short cycle does not prove that you are infertile. It is a reason to look more closely at the full pattern.

What should you track?

Recording the first day of each period is a useful start, but I would also pay attention to:

  • Total cycle length
  • Signs of ovulation
  • The number of days after ovulation
  • Spotting before your period
  • Bleeding length and flow
  • Changes from your previous pattern


Your practitioner may also suggest blood tests or an ultrasound based on your age, symptoms and how long you have been trying.

Your cycle is giving you information

You do not need to panic because your cycle is short. You also do not have to dismiss it simply because it arrives regularly.

Looking at your complete cycle can help clarify your fertile window and identify areas that may benefit from further investigation or personalised support.
